In more recent times it is claimed that Flitwick moor was the
first place to bottle tonic water with “Flitwick Water”
securing the highest award from nine scientific judges at the
National Health Society's exhibition in 1885. It has also been
the site of peat extraction for many centuries up until the
1960s. Today the moor is a site of special scientific interest
being largest area of wetland in Bedfordshire.
